I used all the spices I could find at home: ginger, star anise, cinnamon, bay leaves, fennel seeds, and Sichuan peppercorns. I used one of those disposable filter bags to put the spices in. I also added a packet of Han Palace braising spices from Taiwan. I also added plenty of Himalayan sea salt and Lee Kum Kee's premium soy sauce for flavor.
