This mochi treat takes inspiration from the flavors of Niigata’s beloved sasa dango. With chewy shiratama mochi (rice flour dumplings) kneaded with mugwort and bamboo leaf powder, it has a subtle herbal aroma reminiscent of the traditional leaf-wrapped sweet. It comes paired with smooth red bean paste for a subtly sweet finish.
You can also dilute the red bean paste with hot water for a soothing bowl of oshiruko (sweet red bean soup). Crafted by Echigo Shiratama—a Niigata-based maker specializing in rice-based confections that blend traditional techniques with a modern touch.
Directions (one serving):
1. Place the dango in a heat-resistant container, then add 120ml of water.
2. Heat in the microwave at 500W for 2 minutes – 2 minutes 30 seconds.
3. Transfer to cool water to let it cool slightly.
4. Place in a bowl, and pour the included bean paste over it.
