Green Mango Slices – Born to Protect the Purple Crow Butterfly
These dried green mango slices were created to protect the purple crow butterflies that migrate to Maolin every winter. This product helps farmers reduce pesticide use, safeguarding the butterflies’ wintering grounds while protecting the land and local communities. With each tangy-sweet bite, you can taste the deep sense of care and ecological responsibility behind this snack.
In recent years, the once spectacular sight of thousands of butterflies in Maolin has dwindled, replaced by the tragic sight of butterflies dying along the roadside. The Purple Butterfly Conservation Association invited the Tse-Xin Organic Agriculture Foundation to assist in promoting eco-friendly farming. By guiding farmers to reduce pesticide use and transition toward organic practices, both the land and the butterflies’ habitats are protected. Liren, a long-time supporter of organic agriculture, purchases pesticide-reduced green mangoes at above-market prices and turns them into value-added products like these dried slices. Although early harvests were small and inconsistent in size, Liren still accepted them all to support local Indigenous farmers.
Every winter, the purple crow butterflies journey from northern Taiwan to the warm valleys of the south, one of only two butterfly species in the world with such a migratory pattern (the other is the Monarch in Mexico). Maolin, rich in native green mangoes, relies on this crop for income. To combat fruit flies, farmers once used pesticides, which harmed butterfly habitats and triggered a conflict between conservation and livelihoods.
Processing small, egg-sized mangoes by hand—peeling, seeding, and slicing—is labor-intensive. Yet, workers never gave up, driven by their desire to protect the butterflies. Mr. Hung, CEO of Bean Home Foods, remarked, “With guaranteed bulk purchases, Indigenous farmers are more willing to grow pesticide-reduced crops.” Now available at Liren, these snacks have earned consumer appreciation, boosting farmers’ confidence.
This green mango product links farmers, food processors, Liren, and butterfly conservation into a virtuous cycle. Everyone benefits: farmers reduce chemicals, manufacturers make additive-free snacks, consumers enjoy safe dried fruit, and butterflies find a safe place to overwinter.
