For those not acquainted with Japanese culture, please keep in mind that this is not the soft, sweetly flavored mochi you usually find at supermarkets. This mochi is best appreciated with a Zenzai (azuki beans soup), as it’s too hard (and flavorless) to be eaten raw - better imerge it in a soup, where it’ll acquire flavor and become chewy. Kagami mochi are traditionally consumed on January 11th in Japan, being believed to bring luck for the new year.
