Moisturizing maintains the proper level of moisture between the stratum corneum to maintain the normal functioning of the skin. The outside of the skin is naturally dry, but this function keeps the skin moist from the inside and protects it from irritation. Establishing a new verification method for infant skin
Since Daio Paper has developed a diaper that reduces skin irritation, we used an infant skin model to establish a new verification method for infant skin. We used the inflammatory cytokine IL-1α and filaggrin, a protein in the stratum corneum, as indicators.
IL-1α, which causes inflammation, is secreted in large amounts in irritated skin. In other words, high secretion of IL-1α means that skin irritation is occurring. "Filaggrin is a substance that forms the basis of natural moisturizing factor (NMF), which is necessary for retaining moisture in the stratum corneum. A decrease in the expression of filaggrin, which is responsible for the skin's repair function, means a decrease in the barrier function.
As a result of a test in which a skin model was subjected to frictional stimulation, there was a clear difference in the secretion of IL-1α and the expression of filaggrin in the non-woven fabric model with a smooth surface containing glycerin compared to the non-woven fabric without any treatment, suggesting its effectiveness as a new verification method for infant skin. The results suggest the effectiveness of this new method for verifying the skin of infants.
Diapers have many factors of material stimulation, including stimulation by the diaper itself and stimulation by stool and urine. This was the first time for me to conduct a test using a baby skin model, and once again I realized how important it is to make diapers that do not cause irritation.
