• Star Anise is the fruit of the Chinese evergreen tree Illicium verum. They are 1-inch, deep brown star-shaped pods with six to eight points which each contain a seed. While the names are similar Star Anise and Anise seeds are unrelated. Star Anise has a mild and fragrant licorice flavor with sweet and herbal undertones.
• Ground star anise is the main ingredient in Chinese Five-Spice powder and Vietnamese pho. It’s also part of the Port Royal flavor profile – a mixture of chocolate, grapefruit, and star anise. Use this star anise powder as a rub ingredient for roast pork or beef.
