The "medium spicy" version wasn't spicy at all. I could imagine what it would taste like with tofu instead of eggplant, but it was a bit different from what I expected. It tasted like a brown sauce, similar to what you'd find in American Chinese cuisine. I think opinions will be divided depending on personal preference. Personally, I'd like to add garlic .
