I'm not sure why these are labeled as pecan nuts when they are actually hickory nuts. I knew they were hickories before purchasing them, though. They are roasted and have a 5 spiced flavor. They're pretty tasty snacks but require quite a lot of time & patience to get the nut out of the hard shells. It takes approximately 1 to 3 mins to go through one because of the detailed attention it requires. Even though they are partially cracked already, we still had to use a nut cracker to crack them open bit by bit since the nut sections are held inside the hard, sharp shell sections. We use a tray to catch everything since it gets pretty messy. After cracking them bit by bit, we had to separate the broken nut bits from the broken shell bits & use our finger tips to pick up the tiny bits. Even with our best effort separating the nut bits from the shell bits, we would still end up with tiny hard shell bits in our mouth occasionally, so we need to filter through them with our tougue & spit the shell bits back out so be careful eating them. This is the reason why shelled hickory nuts are so expensive & aren't sold everywhere like pecan nuts.
