In the Edo period (1603-1868), people did not have baths at home, so public bathhouses were built to meet the need. At first they were steam baths, then large bathtubs were developed. Since people were unclothed and mingled without regard to age, sex or rank, everyone was equal in the bathhouse. A popular item for these bathhouse visitors was a fragrant lotion made with distilled flower essences using a device called a Ranbiki.
