(Authentic mapo tofu is too spicy for me ) I cautiously tried the "spicy" version, but it wasn't spicy at all, which was a bit of a letdown . In other words, it was a mapo tofu mix adapted to Japanese tastes. I might buy it again if it's on sale?

I bought this for the first time because it was on sale. I also bought a lot of eggplants at the same time, so I decided to use them instead of tofu and, for the first time, I made mapo eggplant . The "medium spicy" version wasn't spicy at all. I could imagine what it would taste like with tofu instead of eggplant, but it was a bit different from what I expected. It tasted like a brown sauce, similar to what you'd find in American Chinese cuisine. I think opinions will be divided depending on personal preference. Personally, I'd like to add garlic .
