Description

CUSTOMER ADVISORY: You must cook the Balut

How long should you boil Balut?

Balut is prepared by boiling or streaming for approximately 20 to 30 minutes, until hard-cooked. Balut is eaten immediately after cooking as a snack or as part of a meal.

Are you adventurous enough to eat the famous BALUT? Filipinos might remember hearing street vendors yell “Baluuuuut!” with their cart of warm Baluts ready to be enjoyed.

What is Balut?

Balut, a fertilized duck egg, is considered a street food for Filipinos since you can easily buy them hot from street vendors and eat them on the go. While it is considered exotic for non-Filipinos, it's a staple in Philippine Cuisine. An iconic breakfast or merienda for Filipinos, you can finally reunite with this delicious treat!

Get Balut delivered to your home, delicious and ready-to-cook!

Balut tastes just like your regular morning eggs – because it's egg! While a Balut is bigger in size, it also has a mild savory taster with a fermented undertone. The broth is similar to chicken broth and the yolk has a custard-like texture with a slightly fishy and liver-like flavor. The duck or “chick” is tender and dissolves in your mouth, so don't worry about crunching through any bones. Be adventurous and try this Filipino delicacy!

The Chinese first introduced Balut to Filipinos in the late 1800s, and it has been included as a part of its tradition ever since. It's also a famous delicacy in other Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam and Cambodia.

How do you eat a balut egg?

Normally, balut vendors will have salt with them for anyone who decides to consume the egg immediately after the purchase. Sprinkle a bit of salt into the opening and slurp up all the tasty balut soup. After sipping the warm broth, you can begin peeling off the shell and eating the actual balut meat.

Is balut nutritonal?

Balut eggs are an inexpensive and easily obtained source of protein throughout Southeast Asia. They're packed with vitamin C and beta carotene, both of which are powerful antioxidants that help clean free radicals from your bloodstream and support your immune system.

Filipino parents consider it to be a superfood that is good for the brain. One egg boasts 188 calories, 13.7 grams of protein, 14.2 grams of fat, 116 milligrams of calcium, and 2.1 milligrams of iron.

They are not fresh! They were received almost frozen! I was so excited to see them here and disappointed with the quality. The packaging is great though. 😓

Came as 4 and 3 of them had a weird color before cooking as you can see in the first 2 pictures. After cooking, the three weird color had a smell that’s not normal so to be sure, i threw them away. The one that looked normal was just ok. Small duck.
